SUMMARY:Addition of DRI/HBI to the blast furnace – a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?
DESCRIPTION:The addition of DRI to the Blast Furnace (BF) has known beneﬁts for increasing productivity and decreasing coke rate. The impact of DRI additions has been revisited as a strategy to reduce blast furnace CO2 emissions. Technology changes are needed to overcome the challenges of low top gas temperature. We estimate the maximum amount of DRI that can be added to a blast furnace operation and the related carbon dioxide savings. BF operational strategies of various regions around the world dictate the maximum DRI charge to the BF and resulting CO2 saving. A discussion on how operational strategies can be modified to charge more DRI is provided.
